About Mihei Ueoka – An artist who lost his life in the battlefield at the age of 27

Mihei Ueoka was born in Ikazaki (now part of Uchiko) in 1910. His talent for painting was recognized from an early age. However he only started to be a serious painter when he went to Waseda University in Tōkyō. After he graduated from university, Mihei returned to his home town, and while he was teaching in its school he established his atelier in his own house. There he drew many pictures of the surrounding landscape and its people.
But just as his creative activities started to get off the ground in 1937, the Sino-Japanese war broke out and Mihei was called to enlist. In September of that year he was sent to China and was one of many who lost their lives in the suburbs of Shanghai. He had prepared prepared for his very first solo exhibition just before he went to war, but it never took place. Only his paintings are left to us now.
